What Are Invitation Rounds?
Invitation rounds are when the Australian government selects EOI applicants from the SkillSelect pool and issues invitations to apply for skilled visas. They typically occur monthly, though the schedule can vary.
How It Works
- You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) on SkillSelect
- Your EOI enters the pool with your claimed score
- Each round, the government selects the highest-scoring applicants
- Selected applicants receive invitations to apply for their visa
- Invited applicants have 60 days to submit their visa application
Not everyone in the pool receives an invitation. Selection is competitive and based on scores and occupation demand.
Invitation Score Thresholds
Each invitation round has a minimum score threshold. Only applicants at or above this threshold are invited. The thresholds vary by visa type and occupation.
Recent Trends
While thresholds change, recent patterns show:
- 189 visa: Typically requires 85–90 points for most occupations
- 190 visa: Often requires 75–85 points depending on state
- 491 visa: Sometimes as low as 65–75 points for regional occupations
High-demand occupations (healthcare, engineering, IT) may have lower thresholds, while saturated occupations require higher scores.

The Australian government sets annual ceilings (limits) on how many invitations can be issued per occupation. Once a ceiling is reached, no more invitations are issued for that occupation until the next program year.
High-Demand Occupations
Occupations that typically reach their ceilings quickly include:

- Civil engineers
- ICT business analysts
Less Competitive Occupations
Occupations with more availability include:

What Affects Your Invitation Chances
1. Points Score

2. Occupation Demand
Your occupation's demand in Australia matters. High-demand occupations with worker shortages are prioritised over oversupplied ones.
3. Visa Type
The 189 has the most competition. The 491 is often the easiest to receive an invitation for due to higher bonus points and regional demand.
4. Timing
Earlier in the program year (July onwards), more invitations are available. Later rounds may have fewer remaining spots if ceilings are filling up.
5. State Nomination
If you have state nomination, your invitation chances are generally better. States nominate applicants based on their own priorities, which may differ from the federal system.

Maximise Your Score
The single most effective strategy. Every additional point improves your ranking in the pool. Focus on English, work experience, and other categories you can improve.
Consider Multiple Visa Options
Select both 189 and 190 (and 491 if open to regional) in your EOI. This gives you more chances to receive an invitation.

After You Receive an Invitation
60-Day Deadline
You have exactly 60 days to submit your complete visa application. This is not flexible. If you miss the deadline, your invitation is lost and you go back into the pool.
